This site has a collection of databases and knowledge-bases on Codling Moth (Cydia pomonella L.) developed at Integrated Plant Protection Center (IPPC) of Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon in collaboration with Agricultural Research Service of United State Department of Agriculture (USDA). This site is still under construction.
Currently, various informational methods are being used, such as printed paper hard copies, archiving material on CD-ROM, web sites on the Internet, etc. Printed material, although a standard method of providing information is bulky, making transmission to remote locations expensive. Archiving material on CD-ROM, although it can be randomly accessed and is easy to store and ship, is time-consuming to update. The Internet, a powerful information delivery and exchange tool, provides a significant improvement over other information systems. Publication of information on the Internet offers numerous advantages over paper or CD-ROM archiving. Information on the Internet is immediately available from all around the globe. In addition to the wide geographic availability of material, the Internet offers immediate delivery, insuring material itself is as current as possible. Also, the Internet provides a contact point for scientists/researchers involved with similar problems. As general awareness of the Internet increases, more and more people are informed electronically than by hard-copy publications.
There are some Internet resources on codling moth scattered all across
the globe. While these resources are useful, they generally focus on site-specific
information on pest control, lacking coverage of important aspects such
as biology, ecology, phenology, modeling, etc. A sound knowledge
of these areas is the basis for a successful integrated pest management
of this pest. To fill this gap, Integrated
Plant Protection Center (IPPC), in collaboration with Agricultural
Research Service, is developing the Codling Moth Information
Support System (CMISS)
CMISS is an Internet-based information retrieval system based on latest
World-Wide Web (WWW) technologies. This system is an expanding Internet-site
of various informational and bibliographic databases, knowledge bases,
and bibliographies on different aspects of the codling moth. It also provides
links to worldwide Internet resources on the codling moth through a searchable
database and highly customized subject-oriented directories. CMISS
currently hosts knowledge-bases on Codling
Moth Bionomics (CMB), Control Strategies (CMC),
Sex Pheromones (CMP, "the Codling Moth
Pherobase"), Guide
to Historical Codling Moth Events and Quick
Facts (CMQF). These knowledge-bases contain both current and
archival information, providing an up-to-date review of the subject matter.
Various sections of these knowledge-bases are still under construction,
updated as new information is gained.
The knowledge-base on bionomics (CMB) contains information on taxonomy, phylogeny, zoogeography, biology, ecology and ecological adaptation. The knowledge-base on control strategies (CMC) covers a wide array of topics on integrated codling moth management including biological, chemical, cultural, microbial and semiochemical controls. It also provides information on application of Geographical Information System (GIS) and areawide pest management concept to integrated management of codling moth.
The Codling Moth Pherobase (CMP),
which is still under construction, will provide an overview of basic pheromonology
and uses of sex pheromones in codling moth management. The section
on pheromonology will cover aspects such as pheromone chemistry, exo- and
endocrinology, olfaction (including perception and mechanisms of pheromonal
communication), effect of pheromone on sexual behavior, synergists and
antagonist (antipheromones, inhibitors, masking agents, etc.), disruption
of pheromonal communication, effects of environmental cues (temperature,
light, etc.) on female calling and male response, etc. The section on uses
of sex pheromones in codling moth management will include codling moth
monitoring and pheromonal control. The knowledge-base on Quick
Facts will provide a swift access to biological and ecological parameters
required for codling moth modeling, forecasting and risk assessment, zoogeography,
bibliographic information, phenology modeling information, etc. This
knowledge-base information will be extracted and presented in tabular and
graphic format with appropriate bibliographic citations.
This site also hosts a number of bibliographic databases. These bibliographic
databases contain references from journal/review articles, book chapters,
conference papers, technical reports, and abstracts as available.
These database are designed to allow convenient searches by author, year
of publication, title, publication (journal/book title),and keywords with
and without use of logical (Boolean) operators "AND", "OR" and "NOT".
Among these databases, the Codling Moth Index (CMI)
is a general bibliographic database of worldwide codling moth literature.
Containing approximately 6,000 references, it provides nearly complete
coverage of codling moth literature from 1700 - 1998. CMISS also
presents some specialty bibliographic databases, which cover topics like
Sex Pheromones of Codling Moth,
Chemical
Control of Codling Moth (1850 - 1950), Biological
Control of Codling Moth (1846 - 1998) and Systems
Analysis and Modeling of Codling Moth Phenology and Population Dynamics.
These searchable databases are formatted similar to the CMI.
The database on Systems Analysis and Modeling of Codling Moth Phenology
and Population Dynamics contains up-to-date information and bibliography
on modeling parameters extracted from worldwide archival and current codling
moth literature.
